Sending my daughter to camp this summer after thinking of Bar 717 Ranch for over 30 years!

I'm officially sending my middle daughter to camp and am going to have a vicarious thrill hearing all about it from her perspective. I was a camper there in July for the summers of 73', 74' and 75'. Grover and Irma were around as well has Phil and Mindy and their pet pig Jasmine.

When a student at UC Davis I saw Clyde and his wife Peggy Bock whose sister Judy was my first counselor. Judy was teaching elementary school in Davis and Clyde and Peggy were looking for summer counselors.

I, too, remember Charlie Horky ( who was written about in a People magazine years back as being a limo driver to the "rich and famous".) Paul Subkopf was around too and his best friend who was also named Paul as well as the many other people mentioned in one fo the previous messages.

I had just moved from West LA in 1973 to Northern Cal and was astonished to connect with people at Bar 717 who had gone to school with me at Crossroads and Kenter Elementary in LA.

All I have are the best of memories from that camp and I'm hoping my daughter finds the best moments to place in her heart from this coming summer.

Hi There,

I spent 6 summers at the Bar 717 Ranch and always find myself wondering where everyone is now so I figured I'd start a tribe and see who showed up. Hope this finds you all well and happy!

Are we not the Chosen ones to percolate a new Paradigm?

I went to Camp Trinity/Bar717 for 5 years in the 70's. I was there the August that Richard Nixon resigned. I remember it clearly as it was announced at dinner announcements and evereyone cheered a fevered horray.

My experiences during those five Augusts have been haunting me with warm memories lately, and I wonder what others' experiences were like, how this unique environment influenced us into our adult lives. I still hear songs that I haven't heard since we sang them round the fireplace. And I know that my musical tastes are heavily influenced by the songbook there.

But I think the influence goes even deeper than mere music. In the last couple years, after turning 40, I've been doing a lot of soul searching, trying to figure out why I look at the world differently than most americans. and other than my left coast upbringing in so Cal, I have to say it had to be the wonderful summers I spent fishing and swimming the mighty Hayfork creek, or the back country trips we took each August to the Trinity river. The arts and crafts in DeeDee Bartel's studio, welding huge sculptures too heavy to move, and the exhilaration of mail call and shopping the store.

And as I question my extreme comfort level working each June at the Oregon Country Faire, it becomes clear... it was the intensive and intentional community we were part of, and fostored. It would be really interesting to pull together a study of this community's collective values, our perspectives on society, competition, family, music, dance, etc. in relation to other demographics in the same age range.

for instance, how many folks from this era wound up on Grateful Dead tour in the '80's?

There was another camp close by called Earth Camp 1. I've always been curious about those folks. If they came out into adult life in a similar way, or if they're even more radical due to the nature of EC1's vegetarian and permacultural background.

There has to be more "freaks" out there who square-danced each Saturday night, and scoffed at Clydes stupid jokes. It'd be great to reconnect. I visited the Bar717 for the first time since I was a camper there in the summer of 1987. took some friends to the vespers site and we just gazed up at that big mountain that was our backdrop to so many ideal times. they were board, but I was luxuriating in the memories of a sublime ritual.

One last thing... while I was there Grover and Irma (?) were still quite alive; bigfoot stories were a'flourishing, and the taffy pull was my favorite night!!

so all that being said, I can't help but intuitively dream of a dynamic and unique group of educated peeps who can group our collective experience from Camp trinity/ Bar717 and fostor the begginnings of a new paradigm. there must be a lot of us who grew up with a very different consciousness than the normal military enculturated gestapo Amerikkkana.

Can we expand this tribe, interweaving it with other alternative camps and potentially progressive boarding schools (like the school at the Bar717 and others in the sierras) and do "something" with our collective whimsy?

To my friends and old roomates, drop me a line! (BAR 717 1977-78)

Oh good heavens i'm sooo bummed i just missed he planned reunion!...however, i'm stoked to see this li'l 717 clearinghouse up though...

Bar 717 is an enexorable part of my life, particularly during my formative years. i arrived, as a 12 year old boy, at the ranch in April of 1977 and remained there until as a camper and student boarder (when it was also a boarding school) until September 1978. During my stay Grover and his wife Irma Gates (i hope that's the right name) were around and he was a kind and dignified man who had great affection and care for people...but i didn't realize that at the time . I often think of the people I lived with and where they are now...the names I remember are: Carlos Zavala, Beth and Charlotte (rip?) DeGroot, Grant Springer, Dale Vaughn, Scott Wilson, Nathan Wonderman, Trudy Pentland, Alex Schnitzler, Alex Marshall, Andi Wilke..um, hmmm, who else...can't seem to remember. I hope i hear from them or anybody else that went there...oh yeah!
